What's Special About Kaneohe?

How would you like to wake up to birds singing outside your windows, inhale the freshest air you’ve ever breathed, pull on your swimsuit and slippers, and take your kayak down the street to the bay? Then paddle out on the flat water with the sun coming up over the Ko’olau Mountains.  Sounds heavenly, right?

Along the private driveway shared with three other neighbors, Melissa and Todd have enjoyed their own mini, community farmers market.  For a couple of months, their avocado tree produces bags and bags of buttery avocados, which they share with friends and neighbors. In return, they receive coconuts, mangoes, and mountain apples.  And twice a year the lilikoi vine produces those tart yellow fruits to be made into Hawaii’s ambrosia, lilikoi butter.

The neighbors also recycle their food scraps, donating to one neighbor’s chickens in exchange for fresh eggs.  What a Hawaii life!

Not only does this land produce delicious food, but there’s practically a botanical garden in this backyard.  Plumeria, orchids, heliconia, ginger, and many other tropcials are scattered throughout the yard, scenting the air.

On weekends this family, with daughter Lily and pup, Kobi, loves to explore the nearby Friendship Garden Trail, which begins about a quarter-mile up the road. They also connect over to the Oneawa Hills Trail for bigger views over the quarry and the mountains.

At the end of the day, there’s a secret spot Melissa and Todd like to hang out.  Just two steps out the kitchen door, they hide away on the carport rooftop which they outfitted with patio loungers.  There they can restfully take in the Kaneohe Bay views and the passionate purple sunsets overhead at the end of a long Hawaiian day.
